Chicopee Comprehensive High School

English Department Faculty

PHILOSOPHY

The Chicopee Comprehensive High School English Department requires students to read a variety of challenging works of literature, to write organized essays, and to communicate clearly and correctly. Along with the grammar and vocabulary, we emphasize critical thinking, especially the ability to make inferences about what we read. Students are required to analyze both literal meanings and figurative language in poetry, drama, novels, short stories, and non-fiction. We show students that a life-long love of reading contributes to our ability to understand diverse people, places, and issues. We also provide opportunities to require students to reflect on ethics and character.
