SCHOOL CHOICE

SCHOOL CHOICE PROGRAM

The School Choice Program allows a parent to enroll his or her child in a school district that is not the child's home district. Because of space limitations, not all school districts accept out-of-district students under this program. Every year the school committee in each school district decides whether it will accept new enrollments under this program and, if so, in what grades.

In Chicopee, the school committee decides whether the district will participate in the School Choice Program in the spring. It is advisable to contact the Attendance Department in advance, generally during the month of April prior to the year in which you want to enroll your child. If you are interested in having your child attend Chicopee Public Schools under this program, you should contact our Attendance Department at 413-594-3522 at that time.

Chicopee Public Schools requires the submission of an application. If more students apply than there are spaces available, the district will hold a lottery to select which students will be admitted. A sibling of a child currently attending Chicopee Public School under the School Choice Program will receive preference in the admissions lottery. Parents will be notified in writing of the lottery results before the end of the school year.

Once your child is accepted into Chicopee Public Schools under the School Choice Program, he or she is entitled to attend Chicopee Public Schools until high school graduation or until the program is discontinued by the state. You do not have to reapply each year.

If during your tenure as a student in the Chicopee Public Schools under the School Choice Program, M.G.L. c. 76 §12B, you happen to move into the city of Chicopee and become a resident or move to a different city, please immediately notify your school or the Attendance Department at 413-594-3522.

Transportation is not provided for students attending our district under this program. You are responsible for getting your child to and from the school in a timely manner.
